Welcome

Welcome to the Top-o-the-Cake website, a place to get one of a kind cake toppers and other small sculptures. Each unique piece is a blend of your imagination (infinite), the capabilities of polymer clay (considerable) and Top-o–the-Cake craftsmanship.

There are many beautiful ready-made toppers available but if you’re planning a Renaissance wedding or would like the couple on the cake to match the couple at the altar in colors and style then TotC may be the option you’re looking for. If you met in Las Vegas then a couple taking a chance together at the slots might be a possibility. Or if during your romantic riverside picnic was when you knew he was the one maybe that moment belongs on your cake. I had a non-traditional topper and have been married over 25 years. That may not be the reason but why take chances?

The primary medium at TotC is polymer clay. It is versatile modeling clay that accepts a wide range of coatings from natural to stone to bronze to psychedelic spatter painting. Treated with normal care the topper will commemorate your special event for many years.

In the end it’s about getting you a topper that reflects you and your wedding. So please enjoy the gallery but don’t let it limit your ideas. Think about what truly reflects you and then fire off that email to TotC. Thank-you for stopping by and

Kong and Bride
Kong is now posted on the wedding page. He's the largest topper I've made yet but the biggest challenge was getting nice sharp edges and corners on the building. Polyclay really prefers more organic shapes. I've painted this one B&W to evoke the original(best version) film.

New
There are new pieces on each of the gallery pages.

On the wedding page is a faux book topper. As a sculpture it was very simple but combining 2D art with polyclay had its own challeges. If you try it yourself I recommend you give yourself plenty of time to fit them together. Oh, and leave a bit of extra "sacrificial" art aroung the edges for trimming purposes.

The whimsey is a cartoon monkey meant for a first birthday cake. Since he's so simplified (not to say slapped together) and only a single figure, he or something like him would be only $20.00 plus 5.00 shipping.

On the mini sculpture page is Sailor Baby which sounds like an ironic super hero but is just an interpetation of an old family photo. She's a bit unusual in she is freestanding and unpainted.

Right now I'm finishing up a Kong and Bride topper. As soon as it's finished I get it posted. One of these days I'll post a series of photos showing the process from beginning to end. That may be more educational for me than anyone since my nose is generally stuck right down in the work and I may not be seeing the forest for the trees.

What's the story?
There's a danger when you make custom art to order. If someone is looking for a pulp art cover with a detective and a librarian it's very hard not to wonder about the story behind it. It's none of my business but it's hard not to wonder. Ah, the endless frustrations of the artist.

New pages

Reorganized the site a bit today. Added two new pages and a new sculpture. So for the moment pieces will be grouped according to Wedding (self explainatory), Whimsies (anything that comes primarily from my imagination) and Mini-sculptures which are pieces based on real people. Hopefully, this change will save everyone endless scrolling.
